Anything apple-scented smells and feels divine. This amazing apple crumble sensory dough and apple gak dough are no exceptions! We used Asia's gak dough recipe, but modified it a bit at the beginning of play to make an apple crumble sensory dough to start that resembles the texture of homemade moon sand.

To make apple crumble sensory dough, you'll need:

Cornstarch (in the UK this is called cornflour)
Liquid Watercolors (or a little food coloring mixed with water)

Mix about a teaspoon of coloring into 1/2 cup of apple-scented shampoo and stir until the color is evenly distributed. Take 2 Tablespoons of this colored shampoo mixture and set it aside. Mix the remaining colored shampoo with 2 1/4 cups cornstarch. You may need to mix it by hand at the end to make sure the color and shampoo are evenly distributed. Once it's all mixed, it should be moldable and resemble homemade moon sand. You can even make pretend apples with it! In addition to bein moldable, the mixture will also crumble and kids can have fun spooning, scooping, and sifting through the apple crumble dough.

To make apple gak dough, you'll need:

2 Tablespoons of colored shampoo mix (see above)
6 Tablespoons of water

Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of colored shampoo mix to the apple crumble sensory dough and add 6 tablespoons of water. Mix well. You should now have apple gak dough! The apple crumble should transform into stretchy, slimy, apple gak! It feels so soft and smells amazing. It is not as hard and strong as playdough, but it will hold a ball shape briefly before melting into an apple-y ooze.

To make apple oobleck, you'll need:

1/4 cup water

Add 1/4 water to your apple gak and it will turn into drippy wiggly apple oobleck!

When you're all done playing with that, you can always check out this post and make it into pretend/melting ice cream for another day of play.

  1. Great, great, great recipe!!! We had a wonderful birthday party entertaining my 4 year old and his (almost) 3 year old little friend. The boys were so excited! I have to admit, adults found the smell a bit overwhelming after an hour... But Quebec's weather being what it is (close to freezing point today!), we had to play in the dining room; too bad for the sensitive noses ;) Thank you for sharing!

    1. What a fun idea for a party! And you can always make it unscented next time. :) The shampoo scents are definitely QUITE strong! Happy birthday to your little guy!
