We have been eagerly counting down to the September 8th release date of our brand new book!  If you haven't heard yet, The Curious Kid's Science Book is our second book and we couldn't be more excited!  It's all about teaching science to children ages 4 through 8 through play and exploration.

I have my Master's degree in Science Education, and am a former classroom science teacher (elementary, middle, and high school) and director of an outdoor environmental education camp for elementary school kids.  I have been wanting to write this book for years and am so thrilled that it's finally done!  :)  Whether you're a preschool, kindergarten, or elementary school teacher, a parent, caregiver, grandparent, homeschooler, or babysitter - if you work with children ages 4 to 8 and want to encourage their interest in science - this book was written for you.

Our book is divided into the following chapters:

Plants and Seeds
Water and Ice
Mold, Bacteria, and Fungus
Engineering
Food and Candy
Baking Soda and Vinegar
Environmental Science
Living Things

All of the activities are hands-on, age-appropriate, and require ZERO science background for the adults involved. The introduction chapter covers all the background information you'll need to help assist your young scientists in their explorations.  :)  The materials are nearly all from a regular grocery store.  There are a few specialty items that apply to a handful of activities and those are easily ordered online.  The vast majority of activities just require what you have around your house!

Because I know a lot of you would love to start NOW, I'll be emailing the first full chapter (introduction) and the first 10 activities in the book to those of you who preorder!  I know loads of you have already placed your preorder - and this applies to you, too.  Just email me at funathomewithkids@gmail.com and let me know where you preordered the book and I'll send you an email with the introduction chapter and the first 10 activities right away!  The first 10 activities are all about plants and seeds and it's plenty to keep you and your kiddos busy science-ing until the print book arrives, no matter which hemisphere you're in.  :)

This is also a good way to guarantee you'll like the book!  If you pre-order now, but somehow don't like the book (it's full of adorable children, though, so it's probably going to be pretty hard to not love it - just a warning), you can always cancel your pre-order and get all of your money back!

Those of you who have been with us for some time will remember our last book selling out three separate times in the first four months it was out.  Because of this, I really want to make a point of encouraging any INTERNATIONAL readers in particular to pre-order this book if you want to be guaranteed a copy (or copies) in time for Christmas.  It's very hard to convince international bookstores to order a lot of copies of a new US book in advance.  With the last book, all the international preorders were fulfilled and then the book started going out of stock in all the different countries within 24 hours.  This pattern continued over the next few months and resulted in a lot of international readers not being able to get copies in time for Christmas and the winter holidays.  I know it was very frustrating for those of you living outside the US, so I just wanted to make a point of saying that preordering is the way to go if you want to be assured you're going to get a copy this year.  So sorry about that!

  1. This loooks so exciting! My little one is only 18 months but I've bookmarked this for a few years time. We love your other book! What kind of equipment and supplies will be needed for the experiments in this book?

    1. Thank you so much! And great question -- I'll update the post -- but just a handful of specialty items, mainly all stuff from a regular grocery store again! I tried to keep it as simple as possible in regards to the materials. :)

    1. Hi Jill! I hope your granddaughter loves the book - what a fun gift!!! I have the list on this post: http://www.funathomewithkids.com/2015/09/diy-science-kit-gift-for-kids.html
But I'll also list it here for you in case it's more helpful. She doesn't need all of them by any means -- these are just the most commonly used. You should be able to find nearly all of them at a Dollar Tree type store: Plastic cups (short and tall), Ziplock bags, Masking tape, Potting soil, Food coloring, Cotton Balls, Coffee Filters, Salt, Straws, Children's Safety Goggles, Sugar, Cooking oil, Vinegar, Dish soap, Corn syrup, Cotton swabs, Lemon juice, Baking soda, Pinto beans
