Easy Portable Travel or Dining Kit for Kids 5 and up

Sunday, December 28, 2014

Our DIY LEGO Kit with 24 Free Printable Activity Cards was such a hit that I've been putting together additional kits to keep in my purse for times where we're on long car rides or waiting at restaurants, etc.  They're super small and would also work well on plane flights since they take up barely any room.  We almost exclusively use ours when we go out to eat.

I was first introduced to Plus-Plus blocks by my friend, Monica.  They are really neat, but they are a bit pricey.  I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money to get one of the larger sets.

Instead I settled on one of the 100 piece kits and put a kit together using a $2 jewelry box from Michaels (a craft store).  We've found the 100 piece kit is plenty for lots of exploration and creativity and just the right size for a travel kit.

There are several options for the 100-piece kits.  You can buy Basic Colors (what we have), or Neon Colors , or even Pastel Colors.  Though they are labeled as age 3 and up, I really feel that most little ones (in the 3-4 age range) would struggle with getting these together and apart by themselves, so I'd recommend them for kiddos ages 5 and up.

All activities here are activities I feel are safe for my own children.  As your child's parents/guardians, you will need to decide what you feel is safe for your family.  I always encourage contacting your child's pediatrician for guidance if you are not sure about the safety/age appropriateness of an activity. All activities on this blog are intended to be performed with adult supervision.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when activities call for the use of materials that could potentially be harmful, such as scissors, or items that could present a choking risk (small items), or a drowning risk (water activities), and with introducing a new food/ingredient to a child (allergies).  Observe caution and safety at all times.  The author and blog disclaim liability for any damage, mishap, or injury that may occur from engaging in any of these activities on this blog.

  2. They had these kinds of blocks in eraser versions for $1 for 6 or 12 pieces (it was a couple of years back and I don't remember) in the section where they have small toys to put in gift bags to hand out at kids' parties in Walmart.
