Rachael did not pay me for this post, nor did I receive the quilt for free.  I just really adored the finished product and wanted to share with you all.  :)  I have obtained permission to use the photos from her blog here.

I have been a long time fan of my friend Rachael's blog, and when I saw the post on her building blocks quilt, inspiration struck!  I emailed her that day and asked if I provided some art and directions from S, could Rachael make a twin quilt?  Rachael confirmed that she could, so I set to work figuring out what S would want on her quilt.

I explained the concept to S, that she would be getting a new comforter, and that she was going to be the one to design it.  I asked her what she would want to draw and after a few minutes of pondering, she had decided!  A bess beetle!  Those of you who have followed our Facebook page for awhile probably remember that S got two millipedes and two bess beetles as her fourth birthday present from me and her dad.

Once she'd settled on the design, I had her sketch "a very big bess beetle" on a sheet of paper.  She was VERY serious about it.  She drew in pencil so she could erase, and wanted a photo of a bess beetle up on the computer screen to look at as she drew.  Once she was done, I had her write "bess beetle" because I absolutely adore her kid printing.  In addition to her art, I wanted her perfect four-year-old writing preserved in time on her quilt.  I traced over the beetle and her printing with a Sharpie and asked what colors she wanted on the quilt.  She thought for a moment before deciding on just two colors - black and white.  We sent her drawing and directions off to New York for Rachael to work her magic.

And little did we know she would work some SERIOUS magic.  I'll share a few photos here, but you ought to head over to her blog for the full story behind the quilt.

And how did it go over with S?  It is an absolute hit.  It is perfectly her and I know we will treasure it for years and years (and years) to come.

Rachael is currently accepting orders for kids' art quilt design.  Pricing depends on the size, materials, and detail level of the quilt.  Contact her at rachael_dorr@yahoo.com for more info.
