Kid-Made Halloween Decorations: Hanging Spiderwebs

Sunday, October 5, 2014

This was a crazy idea I had a few months back when I was brainstorming for Halloween ideas.  I wasn't sure it would turn out as cool in reality as it was in my head, but I think it did!!!  I love having kid-made holiday decorations, and this one was nice and easy and the end product is super fun (and just the right amount of spooky).  :)

We have ours hanging and it slowly spins.  So cool.

To make it, I had S cut several different lengths of white yarn.  I emptied some washable school glue (aka PVA glue) onto a plastic lid (a plate would also work) and laid out some sheets of wax paper for her.  S dipped each piece of yarn into the glue until it was totally coated and then laid the glue-covered yarn in a spiderweb pattern on the wax paper.  Once she laid the first piece of yarn, I told her to always make sure that the piece she was putting down was touching at least one other length of yarn.  This ensured that her final web would be one full piece.

Here is an aerial shot of her finished web.  I gave her two plastic spiders to add and she pressed them into the glue-y yarn and we left the web out to dry for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, I checked to be sure it was all dry and peeled the wax paper off the back.  Then I used some clear fishing line to make a loop for hanging and hung it up to spooky-up our house.  :)
